SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

This eight week course is perfect for the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER. Taught by Ben Guy you will be introduced to some of the most important aspects of developing painting techniques. This gateway program opens up the road for people who seriously wish to develop their artistic skills with lessons that can easily be practiced and built upon at home.

 
TUE 18/04/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm An Introduction to Art - Sculpture & Drawing
In the first class of this term students will get their hands "dirty" sculpting some basic forms in air dry clay. Once complete students will learn about drawing materials, compositions and still life set ups. Using their own sculptures students will set up a still life scene with lighting, and will then make a series of small drawing studies.
 
TUE 02/05/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Exploring Tones
In this class students will learn how to mix a range of tones with acrylic paint. The mixed tones will be used to make a study in observational painting.
 
TUE 09/05/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Notan Studies in Portraiture
Notan is a Japanese design concept which places light and dark elements next to each other to create images of strong contrast. In this 2 week unit, beginners will be studying portraiture using these effective and educational visual techniques.

Notan is a Japanese design concept which places light and dark elements next to each other to create images of strong contrast. In this 2 week unit, beginners will be studying portraiture using these effective and educational visual techniques.
 
TUE 23/05/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Developing Portraits
In this two week unit students will build on their understanding of Notan portraiture to complete a portrait that articulates the ranges of skin tone.
 
TUE 30/05/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Developing Portraits
In this two week unit students will build on their understanding of Notan portraiture to complete a portrait that articulates the ranges of skin tone.
 
TUE 06/06/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Painting the Human Figure
This class will commence the teaching of the human figure that is strongly studied at the Melbourne Studio of Art. Using images students will learn about the proportions of the body and the placement of models in a picture plane.
 
TUE 13/06/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Painting from Life
In the last class of this introductory course students will get to experience painting from life using a nude life model. Students will explore simple painting processes so that they emerge with a series of paintings that concentrate on spacial placement rather than anatomical detail.

Important to know

Please remember to wear old clothing and shoes to class as paints and other art materials may stain clothing.

Students are required to bring or purchase their own materials for this course. Material kits are available to puchase through our website. Kits purchased through the school are priced with a 20% discount, and can be picked up at the beginning of the first class. If you do not require the full material kit, individual items can be purchased in person at the studio. Please contact our office if you need a material list emailed to you.
