SKILL LEVEL: Absolute Beginner

COURSE CONTENT: This eight week course is perfect for the absolute beginner. Taught by Ben Guy, you will be introduced to some of the most important aspects of developing painting techniques. This gateway program opens up the road for people who seriously wish to develop their artistic skills with lessons that can easily be practiced and built upon at home.

TUE 18/07/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Introductory Drawing & Sculpting Techniques
In the first class of the term students will get their hands dirty sculpting some basic forms in air dry clay. Using your own sculptures you will set up a still life scene to complete a series of drawing exercises that explore a range of drawing materials and composition techniques.
 
TUE 25/07/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Exploring Tone
Students will complete a study in observational painting, learning how to mix a range of different tones in acrylic paints.
 
TUE 01/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Notan Studies in Portraiture
In this two week portraiture unit, students will explore basic Notan techniques such as placing light and dark elements beside each other to create images of strong contrast.
 
TUE 08/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Notan Studies in Portraiture
In this two week portraiture unit, students will explore basic Notan techniques such as placing light and dark elements beside each other to create images of strong contrast.
 
TUE 15/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Developing Portraits
Building on the techniques introduced in the previous Notan unit, students will spend this two week unit developing a portrait that articulates the range of skin tone.
 
TUE 22/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Developing Portraits
Building on the techniques introduced in the previous Notan unit, students will spend this two week unit developing a portrait that articulates the range of skin tone.
 
TUE 29/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Painting the Human Figure
Using reference images, students will be introduced to the proportions of the human figure, and techniques on how to place a model within the picture plane.
 
TUE 05/09/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Painting from Life
In the final class of the term, students will have the opportunity to develop their figure painting skills by studying a life model. Incorporating the lessons introduced throughout the course, students will explore simple painting processes to complete a series of paintings that focus on spatial placement rather than anatomical detail.

Please remember to wear old clothing and shoes to class as paints and other art materials may stain clothing.

Students are required to bring or purchase their own materials for this course. Material kits are available to purchase on this booking engine. Kits purchased through the school are priced with a 20% discount, and can be picked up at the beginning of the first class. If you do not require the full material kit, individual items can be purchased in person at the studio. Please contact our office if you need a material list emailed to you.
