THU 20/07/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Negative Space & the Reductive Charcoal Method
In the first class of the term, students will use careful observation and measurement to complete two drawing exercises, a negative space composition that combines the shapes in the image into an abstract piece, and a reductive charcoal drawing that explores the use of tone.

THU 27/07/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Negative Space & the Reductive Charcoal Method
In the second class of this two week unit, students will continue to build on the techniques introduced the week before, using reference images to create a layered piece that enhances your ability to accurately depict angles and cross reference tones.

THU 03/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Notan Studies of the Human Face
Referencing photographic images of the human face, students will use a Notan method to create a large scale piece first in black and white, then adding a limited tonal range of black, dark grey, light grey and white to result in simple but dramatic images that exhibit a sense of depth.

THU 10/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm The Human Eye
Students will work from photographic references of the human eye that have been divided into a four section grid. Working methodically through each section, students will have the opportunity to develop both crosshatching and blending techniques to create smoothly rendered images.

THU 17/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Contour Lines
Throughout this class students will have the opportunity to work from both reference images and still life objects to develop your ability to capture the three dimensionality of an object. First recreating a drawing of a hand that depicts the contour lines of the palm and fingertips, and then referencing a still life banana to accurately detail the surface of the skin.

THU 24/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Gesture and Texture

THU 31/08/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Figure Drawing
In this two week unit students will work from a range of photographic references to complete a series of studies on the human figure. You will first be introduced to key techniques that enable you to quickly sketch the human figure including evaluation, composition and proportion, and will then learn how to incorporate shadow, midtones and highlights in a large scale piece.

THU 07/09/2017 7:00pm-9:00pm Figure Drawing
In the final class of the term students will have the opportunity to develop their figure drawing skills by studying a life model. A series of timed poses and exercises will allow you to consolidate the techniques introduced throughout the course such as negative space, significant plot points, composition, proportion and three dimensionality.
