COURSE CONTENT: This eight week course is suitable for both absolute beginner students as well as those who have attended other introductory courses at MSA. Taught by Ben Guy, you will develop foundation art techniques that focus on figurative and realistic drawing and painting, undertaking a series of guided and individual projects that will enhance both your self expression and understanding of art history.

SAT 22/07/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Introductory Drawing Techniques
Students will complete a series of simple exercises that explore drawing solid forms in space, considering the environment surrounding the objects to discover techniques that simplify the struggle of proportion and perspective.
 
SAT 29/07/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Expression in Drawing
In conjunction with the observational lessons of the previous class, students will use individual and experimental approaches to understand the importance of personal touch in art making. What makes a drawing powerful, perfection or connection?
 
SAT 05/08/2017 2:30pm-5:00 pm Introductory Painting Techniques
Students will be introduced to the approaches of the Master artists, using black and white paint to complete a range of simple observational paintings that study brush stroke, paint density and tone.
 
SAT 12/08/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Using Colour in Painting
Working with a limited palette of black, white and one or two additional colours, students will appropriate a Master painting using a restricted number of brush strokes to emphasise how little visual language is needed to tell a story.
 
SAT 19/08/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Notan Studies
In this two week unit students will continue exploring the themes of the previous classes, studying basic Notan techniques as an introduction to painting more complex images such as landscapes and portraits.
 
SAT 26/08/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Notan Studies
In this two week unit students will continue exploring the themes of the previous classes, studying basic Notan techniques as an introduction to painting more complex images such as landscapes and portraits
 
SAT 02/09/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Individual Project
In the final two week unit of the term students will have the opportunity to develop an individual project under the guidance of the tutor, which could include a series of observational drawings, a painting of a photograph or a Master appropriation. The project must contain elements of realism and connect to the techniques and ideas introduced throughout the term.
 
SAT 09/09/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Individual Project
In the final two week unit of the term students will have the opportunity to develop an individual project under the guidance of the tutor, which could include a series of observational drawings, a painting of a photograph or a Master appropriation. The project must contain elements of realism and connect to the techniques and ideas introduced throughout the term.

Please remember to wear old clothing and shoes to class as paints and other art materials may stain clothing.

Kits purchased through the school are priced with a 20% discount, and can be picked up at the beginning of the first class.
