The first unit of the course will be spent examining the shapes of works, and the advantages and disadvantages to formats such as square, rectangle, portrait and landscape. THU 02/11/2017 10:00 am-4:00 pm Colour Theory
Students will examine Master Abstraction artists Rothko and Matisse to complete a series of studies that break away from traditional colour theory approaches, and instead focus on creating compositions based on the "weight" of colour.

THU 09/11/2017 10:00 am-4:00 pm What is Absraction?
Students will spend the class examining the works of Magritte, Dali and Pollock to create a small body of informed non-figurative paintings that explore the differences between Realism, Surrealism, Abstraction and Action Painting.

In the last unit of the term, students will look at the revolution of "mark making" in art by examining the works of De Kooning, Monet and Warhol, while also exploring a range of materials and mediums that support the development of a body of abstract paintings.
