SKILL LEVEL: Absolute Beginner

COURSE CONTENT: This eight week course is perfect for absolute beginners who wish to explore the joys of painting. Taught by emerging Melbourne artist Brock Q Piper, students will be introduced to a range of processes and techniques that will provide a base understanding of how to begin a painting practice. After experimenting with oils, acrylics and pastels in the first class, students will be able to select their preferred medium throughout the remainder of the course.

MATERIALS: Materials are provided during the first week of the course. After you have chosen your preferred medium, you are required to bring or purchase your own materials for the remainder of the course. Discounted materials are available to purchase through the school in the studio.

 
TUE 10/10/2017 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Materials and how to use them.
This introductory class will give students an opportunity to get "hands on" with a variety of different paint and drawing mediums. You will undertake a series of short exercises that will also introduce you to the use of different brushes and paint applicators. Students will have a chance to decide which materials will serve them in this course (i.e.: Oils, Acrylics, Gouache etc.)

Tone is an essential part of creating an articulate painting. Leaving behind intricate details that can frustrate and create imbalanced images you will learn how concentrating on a simple range of tones in an image can attain a balanced composition and readable image.
 
TUE 24/10/2017 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Composition
In this class you will learn how to construct an interesting and balanced composition. This class will employ the use of collage and other contemporary techniques and will follow on from the previous class on tone.
 
TUE 31/10/2017 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Portraiture Project - Week 1
Using the foundation lessons of the previous weeks, students will now develop a series of portrait studies that will lead to a finished painting on canvas or board. In this class you will focus on composition.
 
TUE 14/11/2017 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Portraiture Project - Week 2
This class will continue on from the previous week as students develop their portrait painting - an emphasis on tone and balance of tone within the work will be the focus of this class.
 
TUE 21/11/2017 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Portraiture Project - Week 3
Using personal creativity and expression, you will complete your painting using a range of formal and contemporary techniques.
 
TUE 28/11/2017 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Still Life Project - Week 1
The study of still life is no accident. This subject matter lends itself to developing the ability to see shapes in objects and gain spacial awareness. In this 3 week unit, following on from the portrait project, students will work towards completing one or more still life studies/paintings that address fundamental issues of painting.

Please remember to wear old clothing and shoes to class as paints and other art materials may stain clothing.

Students are required to bring or purchase their own materials for this course. Material kits are available to purchase on this booking engine. Kits purchased through the school are priced with a 20% discount, and can be picked up at the beginning of the first class. If you do not require the full material kit, individual items can be purchased in person at the studio. Please contact our office if you need a material list emailed to you.
