SKILL LEVEL: Absolute Beginner

COURSE CONTENT: This eight week course is perfect for absolute beginners, and can be used as a gateway program for students who wish to develop their artistic skills with lessons that can easily be practiced and built upon at home. Throughout the term you will be introduced to a range of fundamental processes and techniques that will enable you to draw what is seen.

Taught by Archie Barry, who has a strong traditional drawing background, focusing her practice on refining fundamental drawing techniques to achieve a sense of realism.

THU 01/02/2018 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Exploring Space in Drawing
Throughout the first two weeks of the course you will be introduced to one of the most vital concepts in drawing, the understanding of space, and more particularly, negative space. You will have the chance to experiment with a number of methods that help define shapes and space in your work, which will also increase your understanding of perspective and proportion.

THU 15/02/2018 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Studying the Human Face
Using photographic images and tracing aids, you will use the No-tan method to explore the shape and tone of the human face, and will then enlarge this image free hand, emphasising the importance of simple shapes collating complex images.
 
THU 22/02/2018 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Drawing the Eye
In this class you will examine one of the most complex facial features, the human eye, and will learn how to break down images into segmented and simple shapes.
 
THU 01/03/2018 7:00 pm-9:00 pm The Power of Line
Line has the potential to convey the individual and personal mark of the artist, and in this class you will work from still life to explore contour drawing and develop the quality of line in your work.
 
THU 08/03/2018 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Gesture & Texture in Drawing
Using animal images as a reference, you will get the opportunity to explore a variety of drawing approaches and mediums to learn about building texture and mark making in drawing.
 
THU 15/03/2018 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Figure Drawing
In anticipation of the last week of term, this class will introduce you to a series of tools and approaches that will enable you to effectively draw the human figure from reference imagery.
 
THU 22/03/2018 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Life Drawing
For the final class of the term you will consolidate the knowledge learnt throughout the course, using both traditional and contemporary observational techniques to draw from a nude life model.
